Shown here are a couple of powder horns that were photographed on a table top against a black paper background with a shadow. Contrast this with most of the other images on this web site that were shot shadowless, against a white paper background. The white shadowless background enables masking of the background for display or printing on a pure white or different color background. Table top photography with a shadow is a different aesthetic that was common before the white background of the web. Table top or shadowless is the choice of the client and will depend on the intended use of the image.
These powder horns were additionally photographed using focus stacking. This technique is also shown in the Queen Anne pistol and Sword photographs. The technique allows the final image to be in focus at all points. This is a problem when you photograph a relatively small, complex, object very close to the camera lens. With focus stacking, multiple photographs are taken of the object, each with a different focal point. The multiple images are then combined by computer software into one image. I can offer this advanced technique and others where appropriate.
